Can indigenous stories be responsibly digitized?

This question arose from the Community Informatics Researchers listserv in reaction to my paper The Story Economy. My basic argument was that community knowledge (including indigenous stories/knowledge] can be an entry point for some disadvantaged communities to participate in the mainstream information economy (through such mechanisms as wikumentary, although that was not explicit in my paper). Most of the rebuttals have pointed out that commodification of indigenous knowledge is inconsistent with many indigenous ideologies and amounts to exploitation.

Please discuss!
