Q: What's a wikumentary?
A: Wikumentary is a portmanteau of 'wiki' and 'documentary.' That is, if a wiki and a documentary had a baby, it would be a wikumentary: a collaboratively-produced documentary.
Q: Why not wikimentary?
A: This, of course, is the other portmanteauly option.
Most importantly, I don't like the way it sounds. Being against giving important things silly-sounding names, I'm opting for the slightly less awkward wikumentary.
I also like the idea that wikumentaries can be about "u" - the easiest subject to document is undoubtedly yourself.
Next, the term 'wikimentary' is already being used a lot to describe collaboratively edited video. While I think that's nifty, I think collaborative documentary can be a lot more than that, especially if it's web-based. For more, see this blog post
Finally, all the good URL variations of wikimentary were taken.
Q: What do I do here?
A: This website is an experimental documentary about me, Mike Nutt. You can either read/listen/look about me or contribute to the documentary yourself.
Q: I don't want to read every damn wiki entry - who are you?
A: I've been a part of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Department of Communication Studies for the last seven years - first as an undergraduate and since 2005 as the Media Technician for the Department's Media Production program. I am also currently enrolled in the UNC School of Social Work's Nonprofit Management Certificate Program. I've been making media since high school, including stints as a writer, audio artist, musician, multimedia documentarian, reporter, radio DJ, and sound engineer. I grew up in Jackson, Mississippi.
Q: Why is this site so lame?
A: Mostly because I don't know anything about the Internet. Please visit often and subscribe to the RSS feed - things will get better. I promise to learn more about the Internet and make your visit as pleasant as I am able.
The other factor contributing to the site's lameness is the fact that I'm using TikiWiki as the CMS. While this is a flexible and powerful CMS that allows for lots of different features, it has a high learning curve.
If you have site design or feature suggestions, by all means, drop me a line.
Q: Why should I register?
A: If current Google search results tell us anything, this site is the only talking about wikumentaries. That's well and good, but I don't want ME to be the only one talking about wikumentaries. Registration allows you to participate in the discussion. It is only appropriate that the notion of wikumentary be one developed by lots of people. Wikumentary.net should be a lively community.
Registration allows you to:
- post to the On Wikumentary blog
- participate in the discussion forum
- comment on blog and wiki posts
- send messages to other users
TikiWiki allows for a lot of rich features, but currently these are the main ones enables for registered users. If there's something else you'd like for community members to be able to do, drop me a line.
Q: How do I comment on the blog?
A: You have to register for the site. This is currently the best protection TikiWiki offers against spambots.
